After tragically losing his mother to ovarian cancer in 2014, John Orofino ’09 decided to put both his energy and time into fighting the disease that took his mother’s life. In the past two years he made a solo hike of the 220-mile John Muir Trail and the 90-mile High Sierra Trail, raising $77 thousand for ovarian cancer research.
“Losing my mother was and is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to deal with,” said Orofino, “but each year we are able to raise awareness and funds, gives us the opportunity to decrease the amount of mothers, daughters, sisters and role models we lose every year.”
This August and September he is biking California’s Highway I, the 550-mile stretch from San Francisco to Los Angeles, with hopes of bringing that total to $100 thousand. Follow his journey at https://www.facebook.com/WalkingForKaren.
