Drunken Shakespeare plays at Pacific’s Long Theater

Drunken ShakespearePacific Theatre Arts is producing Livermore Shakespeare Festival’s original sketch comedy Drunken Shakespeare, a compilation from plays and sonnets, featuring Shakespeare’s famous drinking scenes and his beloved tipsy characters. Compiled by Professor Lisa Tromovitch, the performance is set in Hotspur’s Hangout, a medieval-inspired tavern where root beer floats and other drinks are available. “The local pubs and ale houses were the community centers in Shakespeare’s time. Creating one on the stage of the Long Theater celebrates Shakespeare’s legacy during 2016, the 400th anniversary of his death,” stated Tromovitch. This production will definitely not be reminiscent of the plays you remember from high school literature class. It offers a fresh look at Shakespeare that is fun and interactive. Drunken Shakespeare is an homage to the comic characters in many well-known Shakespearean plays. Tromovitch notes “and they are some of his funniest.”

Arrive early to get a root beer float or root beer soda, included with every admission (a lemon-lime soda alternative will be available). Or select a 4-brand tasting plank and vote for your favorite flavor! Additional servings cost $5/each, payable at the performance.

Results of the tasting poll will be posted on the Theatre Arts WordPress site (www.pacifictheatrearts.wordpress.com). Limited edition souvenir mugs (they turn orange when filled with a cold beverage!) are available for purchase while supplies last! The cost is $5/mug.

One of the featured brands of root beer is A&W Root Beer, founded in Lodi, California.

Drunken Shakespeare will be performed in University of the Pacific’s Thomas J. Long Theatre. The show runs Homecoming weekend of October 14, 15, and 16th, and the following week on October 20, 21, and 22.
